In this article we are going to cover one of the branches which is “Biochemistry”.
Biochemistry is the study of the chemical reactions required for life to exist and function, usually a focus on the cellular level. In simple words, it is the study of role which chemistry plays in life process. People who are in the field of Biochemistry are often referred to as Biochemists.
Attention to detail, the ability to work with a team and good communication skills are all important qualities for a biochemist to be able to thrive and succeed in a lab environment.
This includes mathematical, analytical, interpersonal, speaking and writing expertise and further being detail-oriented.
Whether you work at the bench or in the field, you must have the research and technical skills required to execute your studies. Over the course of your doctoral training, you need to become proficient in study design, the appropriate statistical analysis of your data, and interpreting the results.
To succeed in any discipline, you need to know the content. For biochemists, this means both a broad-based knowledge of science and a deep knowledge of a specific research area. But that’s not sufficient because science is dynamic; that knowledge base changes as researchers learn new things. So, to be competitive, you need to be able to critically evaluate the scientific literature, integrate new information about your field into your existing knowledge base, and identify gaps that are ripe for new investigation.
In order to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry, student must have passed higher secondary education or 10+2 with biology and math as subjects with a minimum of 50 per cent marks. The duration of bachelors is mostly three years.
Pursue M.Sc in Biochemistry for 2 years.
Pursue Ph.D in Biochemistry for 3-5 years. To pursue this course you need to complete your masters in a biochemistry course.
M.Phil Biochemistry is a full time 2-years postgraduate degree that enables you to have deep insights into chemical processes and biological systems
A biochemist can think of working with fields in medical, agriculture, public health care, forensic environment etc. Because of the nature of work there is a tremendous scope of research.
Research is a primary avenue for biochemists. They can be employed as research assistants in various government and private laboratories, pharmaceuticals, hospitals and health-care facilities.
They conduct research in laboratory settings for the advancement of treatments and pharmaceutical drugs. They carry out a wide range of tests and experiments on tissue samples and fluids, for the diagnosis of diseases, and development of treatments.
They have got a background in biochemistry, conduct experiments on various microorganisms such bacteria and viruses? They are employed by different health agencies, pharmaceuticals and health care centers.
Biochemists often provide expert advice and review to government and private organizations. Biochemical consultants are also actively employed by various law firms and legal departments, for consulting on forensic and medical matters.
Biochemists can work as full-time or guest lecturers at universities and colleges. They may also teach in schools to higher secondary class students.
Chemists and materials scientists study substances at the atomic and molecular levels and the ways in which the substances interact with one another. They use their knowledge to develop new and improved products and to test the quality of manufactured goods.
Some colleges/University have admissions in B.Sc. in Biochemistry following their own entrance test or considers the marks in the qualifying exam.
A significant number of biochemistry graduates are working in the UK either as biochemists, medical scientists or laboratory technicians six months after graduation. A large proportion of graduates go on to further study. Almost 75+% of biochemist graduates go for employment and further studies.
After 2020, world is going to be more aware about different viruses. With the increase in worldwide population size, study of virology became more important & virus related research will be the favorite area for any biochemists.
Also, the pharmaceutical industry especially the drug discovery sector is going to face a big challenge which in turn will need a huge number of young professionals. Not only the R&D sector but also the quality control and quality assessment sector need to recruit lots of industry-ready fresh biochemists.
Therefore, time demands to study Biochemistry in BSc and MSc so that they can serve humanity shortly.
