The company secretary acts as a bridge between the company and its Board of directors, shareholders, government and regulatory authorities.
A company secretary plays a vital role in the smooth functioning of a corporate entity, particularly with regard to ensuring compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements and for ensuring that decisions of the board of directors are implemented.
Usually the top management of the organisation is busy with managing the general working, they hardly get time to mingle with stakeholders and retain their confidence. In order to tackle that, the organisations/ companies hire qualified and skilled professionals as Company Secretaries.
The Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) constituted under an Act of Parliament i.e. the Company Secretaries Act, is the recognized professional body in India to develop and regulate the profession of Company Secretaries in India.
A Company Secretary has to keep a lot of balls in the air at the same time: preparing for meetings while making sure that corporate governance compliance is up to date; supporting communications between management and the board of directors, etc. The diverse job responsibilities of a company secretary make it clear that there will be times when a person in this role will have to perform more than one task simultaneously.

Company secretaries are the people who form the point of contact for the organisation with that of other vendors or organisations. In such a scenario, it is important for an individual working in this role to have a decent understanding of the organisation.
Professional must possess high integrity and ensure that their actions are transparent and that they are accountable for the same. One must possess high moral values so that they are able to provide fearless guidance to the people in the organisation who are in decision-making positions.
A CS has to continuously update himself with latest changes and interact with board of directors to take decisions regarding board meetings, corporate governance, etc. Hence, it is necessary that he should possess effective written as well as oral communication skills that can be useful for.
After 10+2 pass or equivalent, students must take up ICSI Foundation course. The duration of the foundation course is eight months. It can be pursued by students of Arts, Science or Commerce stream (Excluding Fine Arts).
After qualifying the ICSI Foundation course, students can enrol in ICSI Executive Course. However, Graduates and Post Graduates (excluding Fine Arts students) can directly enroll in the Intermediate course without going for the Foundation course.
Students who clear ICSI Intermediate course are eligible for the last stage of the ICSI course, i.e., Final.
It is the most important aspect for students pursuing courses in Company Secretary. Students must undergo short-term training programmes during the Executive level and after the final level exams of Company Secretary course.
