What exactly they do?

  • Designing plans: According to the client requirements and budget, they present the first design plan including electrical layouts.
  • Presenting it to the client
  • Final plan: After all the discussions and modifications, final plan is prepared.
  • On field work starts: Once design is finalized, they start working closely with the architects, structural and engineers to see how the entire design & space will look.

During the entire project cycle, they coordinate, oversee the progress and source relevant materials.

Drawing skills

First stage of Interior Designing is to draw preliminary sketches & therefore sketching skill is must.

Today, interior designers work with contractors, architects, engineers, craftsmen, furniture dealers, and business and home owners. To become a successful interior designer, you need a well-rounded education and the skills to work within many disciplines (architecture; graphic design; decorative arts; and textile, furniture, and lighting design)

How to go for it?


A bachelor's degree is usually required in order to become an interior designer. Popular Interior Design degrees are B.Sc, B.A., B.Des (Bachelor of Design).


One can pursue Master of Design, M.Sc and M.A after graduation.

Certificate & Diploma

Certificate and diploma courses in Interior Design act as an added advantage.

Interior designers help in planning out the layout of an establishment that can be a house, office, etc.  in such a manner that the area at hand is utilized in the best possible way.

However, designer can do the work of decorator too! Whereas, a decorator decides what accessories, artistic pieces, paints, and the like can be used to beautify a given space. The basic difference between an interior designer and interior decorator is that of education. Simply put: a designer can decorate, but a decorator cannot design.
